Environment Education Comic Book
Case study
Committed to fostering environmental education, I have worked alongside the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., and the Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) of Sarawak to produce an educational comic book for young students of Year 1 to Year 3 in Primary Schools.

In this initiative, I played a pivotal role in shaping the creative direction, contributing my expertise in illustrations and copywriting. The comic book showcases a unique style that creatively adapts real individuals into comic illustrations through professional editing techniques.
The client requested a comic book design aimed at students aged 7-9, with a focus on making it both appealing and educational. After presenting several comic illustrations, the client expressed a preference for a unique style that blends real-life environments and individuals, transformed into comic characters. Although this approach was unconventional, the project was ultimately a success.
Throughout the project, we encountered several challenges:
-
Research on Environmental Education and Comic Book Design:
A deep understanding of both comic book design and environmental education was essential for the project. As part of the team, my role as a copywriter and designer required me to grasp the intricacies of environmental topics to ensure accurate representation in the comic. -
Models for hire:
The comic required real-life photos of individuals to be converted into comic characters. Hiring professional models would have been time-consuming and costly. -
Procurement of supporting images:
The comic also required supporting images, such as backdrops and additional illustrations, which are time-intensive to create from scratch and incur costs if sourced externally.
To address these challenges, we implemented the following solutions:
-
Expert assistance:
I dedicated time to studying comic typography and layout, expanding my understanding of the medium. I also collaborated closely with the WWF Lead Officer on the project to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the environmental education content. -
Hiring among peers:
To manage costs and timelines, I enlisted friends to participate in monthly photoshoots, offering them fair compensation for their time. -
Stock photos:
After discussing with the team, we decided to incorporate stock photos for certain illustrations, a solution that was approved by the client and helped save time and resources.
As a result, the comic book design was successfully completed and launched, meeting the client's expectations and engaging the target audience in a creative and educational way.
